Airplane! is a 1980 American satire comedy film, a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows the plot and the central characters.

Ex-fighter pilot and taxi driver Ted Striker became traumatized during the war, leading to a pathological fear of flying. His wartime girlfriend, Elaine Dickinson), now a flight attendant, leaves him. Striker nervously boards a Boeing 707 on which she is serving, hoping to win her back, but she rebuffs him. After dinner is served, most of the passengers and the flight crew fall ill from food poisoning. All eyes are then on Ted, the only person on board capable of landing the plane.

Zero Hour

A routine flight turns into a major emergency as passengers and crew succumb to food poisoning - is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane? If that plot sounds vaguely familiar, it's because the 1970s remake called Airplane! was based on this classic movie.

Ted Stryker is an ex-World War II fighter pilot who, 10 years after the end of the war, is still haunted by a decision he made that resulted in the death of several of his men. He's been unable to keep a job and when he gets home one day, he finds a note from his wife saying she and their young son Joey are leaving him and flying to Vancouver. He manages to get on board the aircraft before it leaves but when the pilot and co-pilot - along with many passengers, including his son Joey - fall severely ill due to food poisoning, Stryker is the only man on-board with any flying experience, though not in multi-engine aircraft. He has to overcome his fears if he is to save the life of his loved ones and the rest of the passengers and crew.

Hysteria grips California in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. An assorted group of defenders attempt to make the coast defensible against an imagined Japanese invasion, in this big budget, big cast comedy. Members of a Japanese submarine crew scout out the madness, along with a Captain in Germany's Navy.

Airplane II, The Sequel

A 1982 sequel to the 1980 American comedy film Airplane! Once again we find man-with-a-past Ted Striker compelled to take over the controls of crippled aircraft, all the while trying to patch up his relationship with stewardess Elaine. This time, the first passenger space shuttle is launched into orbit - and takes off for the moon - but the on-board computer malfunctions and sends the craft hurtling toward the sun, threatening the lives of everyone on board.
